Over a Barrel Animal Rescue Program
The Dax Foundation expounds the celebration of all life and feels that altruism is not species-specific. It is with these ideals in mind that the Dax Foundation launched the Over a Barrel Animal Rescue Program (OAB). OAB will give lifetime housing and care to animals in need, particularly abused and neglected big cats (Lions, Tigers, Panthers, etc). OAB seeks to specifically address the problems associated with the exploding growth and cruel treatment of largely illegal breeding of big cats.
In the United States today there are more tigers in tiny cages than there are wild tigers in all of Asia. Why are there so many of these big cats? Legal breeders provide an unlimited supply of baby tigers for photo opportunities until they are about 5 months old. At that time, they are too big and potentially too dangerous, so they are replaced by new litters of cubs. If the replaced animals are not killed immediately, they risk living lives languishing in traveling circuses, on display as mascots at gas stations or waiting for their certain death in illegal staged hunts. Illegal breeders have established “Cub Mills” where tigers are force bred to deliver cubs that are usually sold out of pickup trucks or online as pets for usually less than $400. There are thousands of these animals being cruelly exploited, mistreated, and living miserable lives.
These magnificent animals need a place of refuge. The Dax Foundation has recently purchased 120 acres of untouched land in the beautiful Lucerne Valley of Southern California for this unique facility. OAB will provide sanctuary to as many as 4000 rescued animals. A fully equipped veterinary hospital and ancillary support structures to service the OAB animals are currently in the design phase. Once completed, the veterinary facility, operating under the Humane Hospital for Animals Program (HHA), which also operates under the auspices of the Dax Foundation, will provide veterinary services to all animals in need, offering their guardians and good Samaritans a sliding scale, pay-as-you-can fee schedule.
