Grant to Fund Purchase of Multimedia Technology and Classroom Learning Aids to Help Teachers Enhance Learning Experience for Students
LOS ANGELES - December 5, 2007 - The Dax Foundation, a private, non-profit, philanthropic foundation based in Los Angeles, announced today that it has awarded an educational grant to Lugo Elementary, a K-6 school in the Lynwood Unified School District in Lynwood, California. The grant will fund the purchase of multimedia technology and classroom learning aids to help teachers improve learning and academic achievement for Lugo students.
The Dax Foundation approved the grant after receiving a request from Lugo second grade teacher Shana Siegel who was eager to gain access to additional tools that could help her deliver her lessons in more engaging and effective ways. Ms. Siegel applied to the Dax Foundation upon learning of the Foundation’s planned December 11, 2007 auction of Orson Welles' own Academy Award from his acclaimed 1941 movie Citizen Kane in order to raise awareness of the Foundation’s philanthropic mission and charitable programs.
“This grant from the Dax Foundation is great news for the students, teachers, parents and community involved with Lugo Elementary and the city of Lynwood, California,” said Susan Skornia, Principal at Lugo. “The additional tools and resources this grant will provide will help Lugo’s teachers enhance the learning environment, work towards achieving measurable improvements in grade averages and test scores, and foster long term academic success for our students.”
The grant will also help contribute to the attainment of key goals for Lugo Elementary and the Lynwood Unified School District, which include providing an appropriate learning climate for every student, efficiently allocating resources to support rigorous, high quality instructional programs, and improving student academic performance. Assuming it proves successful in enhancing student learning as measured by class grades and student test scores, the grant for Lugo represents the first phase of a program the Dax Foundation hopes to be able to expand to additional classrooms and schools in the district.
“We are very pleased to offer this grant to assist Lugo Elementary teachers with additional classroom tools to improve educational opportunities and achievement for Lugo students,” said Dave Weisman, Executive Director of the Dax Foundation. “We were extremely impressed with Ms. Siegel’s devotion to her students both in the classroom and beyond. Equally important to us was supporting a program that can make a positive and sustained impact in the lives of many children, initially at Lugo and additional schools in the future, while inspiring them to follow their hearts and pursue their own dreams.”
“Having demonstrated an exceptional dedication, enthusiasm and passion for the success of her students, Ms. Siegel typifies the kind of individual that the Dax Foundation seeks to support in pursuing the Foundation’s primary objective of empowering people to follow their hearts, pursue their passions and realize their dreams in order to help make the world a better place,” Weisman added.
