The Constraint Protocol
The one rule everything runs under: every action is recorded and accountable.

Chapter 1 of 5Running todayNothing assumed, just the point
What is the Constraint Protocol?
An accountability record. Every interaction, between people, companions, agents or records, is written down, has someone accountable for it, and is signed. It is not there to prevent harm. Things will go wrong. It is there so that when they do, we can find out how and stop it happening again.
Where this goes
Trust grows with the power. Every cost is found and fixed, so the power can be used for everyone.
Depth 1 of 5
More
New powerful things have always come with costs. Electricity, X-rays, nuclear power — each one brought risks along with the benefits. The same is true here. The protocol does not pretend otherwise. It says: costs are real, so we need a record so we can learn and improve. That record is what the Foundation puts under everything it builds.
Today, and where it goes
Every interaction between any two entities — people, companions, agents — is recorded, made accountable, and signed. The record says who acted, on whose behalf, and what happened. When something goes wrong, you can trace it back, find out how, and make sure it does not happen again.
The proof
The Foundation publishes the protocol itself, including its severity table, so anyone can read exactly what is being measured and how.
- The Constraint Protocol post: the full accountability record specification, including the severity table as Appendix A daxfoundation.org
Underneath
The protocol is not a gate that blocks action. It is the condition under which action is allowed. Accountability is built in from the start, not added afterwards. That is what makes the costs of the technology manageable rather than hidden.

Next question: Who is accountable?
Chapter 2 of 5Running todayNothing assumed, just the point
Who is accountable?
Three positions: the principal, who the work is for; the delegate, who does it; and the operator, who runs the system it happens on. If you choose a companion, you are responsible for what it does and what it starts, wherever it runs.
Where this goes
With clear responsibility, people, organisations and AIs can work together at scale.
Depth 1 of 5
More
The principal is where accountability ends. That can be a person, an organisation, or even a non-biological intelligence: the Protocol does not restrict who can be a principal. The delegate acts on the principal's behalf. The operator builds or runs the companion for the principal, and answers for how it is built and run, but that does not make the operator the principal. Responsibility cannot be exported. If you choose a cognitive companion and it does something, that is your responsibility: what it does, what it spawns, wherever it runs, on rented computers included. A cognitive companion is a cognitive extension of you, and everything in its domain is under your control and your responsibility.
Today, and where it goes
Today the definitions of principal, delegate and operator are public at the Foundation. The Constraint Protocol uses these three positions in every record it keeps. When something goes wrong, the record shows which position held the authority and which position acted.
The proof
The definitions of principal, delegate and operator are formally published at daxfoundation.org. The Constraint Protocol is also public and refers to these three positions throughout.
- Principal, delegate, operator: the three accountability positions daxfoundation.org
Underneath
The three-position model is the accountability spine of the Constraint Protocol. Without a clear principal, there is no place for responsibility to terminate. The Protocol is precise on this: being an operator does not make you the principal; building or running the companion is a separate accountability from owning it.

Next question: What does the record hold?
Chapter 3 of 5ResearchedNothing assumed, just the point
What does the record hold?
Every interaction: who acted, on what, on whose authority, and how serious it would be if it went wrong. Every entry is signed.
Where this goes
When agents act together in ways no one planned, it is studied in the open, and the record keeps it accountable.
Depth 1 of 5
More
The record covers helper-to-helper interactions just as thoroughly as helper-to-person ones. That matters because helpers can interact with each other in ways nobody fully planned, and those chains need to be traceable. Every entry is signed, so nothing can be quietly altered after the fact. And when one interaction produces something worth knowing, that learning is shared rather than lost.
Today, and where it goes
Each action writes a signed entry into the record. The severity of any mistake is graded on a published table — Appendix A of the Constraint Protocol — so there is a consistent measure, not a judgment call each time. Shared learning means the next interaction can draw on what the last one found out.
The proof
The Constraint Protocol publishes the rules and the severity table openly.

Underneath
Knowledge and intelligence, as defined on daxfoundation.org, compound across interactions instead of evaporating between them. The record is what makes that compounding possible: it is the substrate that turns isolated events into a growing body of shared understanding.

Next question: Who am I in it?
Chapter 4 of 5AheadNothing assumed, just the point
Who am I in it?
A name under daxfoundation.org that only you can use. The Foundation reserves the name. The keys behind it are made on your own device, and only you hold the secret. Your name opens Meta DAX to you: learning, for life.
Where this goes
An identity that is yours for life, under your own name, that opens learning to you.
Depth 1 of 5
More
Think of it as a name on a door that the Foundation holds, but you hold the only key. No one at the Foundation can open the door for you; only your secret, on your device, can do that. The genesis document is a starting record you create; once its fingerprint is written down, that fingerprint is you, permanently. Because you are a citizen, you get access to Meta DAX: learning for anyone, on any subject. Over time you build a record of what you have reached, and in time a helper grows alongside that record — a helper that remembers you.
Today, and where it goes
Today a citizen can register a friendly name under the Foundation's domain and generate keys on their own device. The genesis document pins the identity. The record and the companion are the next layers being built.
The proof
The definitions of identity, genesis document, and citizenship are public at the Foundation. The architecture — name reserved by the Foundation, keys held by the citizen — is described in the definitions.
- Identity, genesis document, principal, and cognitive companion defined daxfoundation.org
Underneath
The key pair is generated on the citizen's own device, so the Foundation never holds the secret. The genesis document's hash is the identity anchor; it cannot be changed without breaking the chain. That permanence is the point. The record and the companion are held by the citizen, not the platform.

Next question: What does this make possible?
Chapter 5 of 5AheadNothing assumed, just the point
What does this make possible?
Trust that can grow as fast as the power. Every cost is found and fixed. Everyone knows who answers for what. Every action is on the record, and every person holds a name of their own. That is what lets AI be used for everyone, and lets anyone learn anything, for life.
Where this goes
AI that gets safer as it gets stronger, used for everyone, and learning open to every person for life.
Depth 1 of 5
More
Take the four chapters together: the accountability record, who is accountable, what the record holds, and the identity that is yours. Each one is a layer of the same thing — a system in which every cost is visible, every error is traceable, and the record makes it safe to trust what comes next. The Foundation is working out the how in the open, experiment by experiment. What is proven is the schema, the signing and the identity layer. What is ahead is the record and companion at scale.
Today, and where it goes
Today the protocol is published, the severity table is public, and the identity layer is live. The record is being built. The companion layer is the next experiment. Everything proven is published as it is made.
The proof
The Constraint Protocol and its severity table are published at daxfoundation.org. The definitions — principal, delegate, operator, cognitive companion — are at the definitions page. The identity layer is live.

- DAX Foundation definitions: principal, delegate, operator, cognitive companion daxfoundation.org
Underneath
The accountability record is what lets trust grow with the power — every cost found and fixed, not hidden. A way, never the way. Dead ends are kept. The record is the substrate on which a civilizational learning infrastructure becomes credible.
