Everybody Moves: fitness is for everybody

The slogan is four words and it is easy to nod at. “Fitness is for everybody.” What makes it worth a whole piece is that Arnold’s Pump Club spells out what it would have to mean to be true, and the spelled-out version is a harder promise than the slogan.

From the Pump Club’s own material: “Fitness is for everybody, everyone has the right to be healthy and fit and to train.” Not everyone should be fit — everyone has the right to be. A right you cannot afford is not a right. So the next line is the one that actually binds: “Progress, not profit, is our primary business principle.” And the structure matches the words — the daily newsletter and the Monday workout go out free whether or not you ever pay for the app, and he has said plainly, to Inc. in August 2026, that the company “is backed by me,” that there is no private equity behind it, “this is a crusade, not just a business.”

We are not in that business and we are not pretending to be. But we had to answer the same question he answered, because our mission is the same shape — get people moving, all of them — and the question is: what does “for everybody” cost the person it is for?

“Everybody” is a price before it is anything else

You can mean “fitness is for everybody” as a vibe, or you can mean it as a budget line. The difference shows up at the checkout page. A tool that is free to try and then $9.99 a month is not for everybody; it is for everybody who has $9.99 a month to spare on it, which is a much smaller and much richer set of people. The Pump Club handles this by keeping the daily, the thing that builds the habit, outside the paywall entirely.

We went further, because we could, and because giving software away costs differently than giving coaching away. Our half of this series’ grand opening is a stack we are handing over, not renting:

  • The gift — the whole thing, given, not licensed.
  • Own your own stream, one click — you run it, so no one can meter it or take it back.
  • Re·UI and the gesture lab — an interface and a set of written-down techniques you move in front of, free to take and free to teach.

It is free, and it is built on compute we pay for. That is the honest version and we say it in both directions: the person using it pays nothing, and that only works because the bill is carried somewhere the person never sees. “For everybody” has a cost; we just decided it should not be the mover’s cost.

The beginner is the whole test

Here is the tell that separates a real “for everybody” from a marketing one: look at what the thing offers the person who has never done it. The Pump Club’s answer, in its own beginner material, is chair squats and incline pushups — movements scaled so that a person with no base and no equipment can start today, in a living room, and the record notes that beginner workouts include exactly those. The out, in his framing reported on his own feed, is that you do not have to be young or equipped or experienced — you just have to show up.

That is the bar, and it is the bar we hold our own tools to. The gesture lab is not a highlight reel of what a fit person can do; it is a set of techniques written so that the first move is reachable from a chair. Re·UI does not assume a trained body in a clear room with good light. If “for everybody” is real, the easiest possible version of the first step has to be in the box — not sold as an add-on, not unlocked at tier two, not gated behind a form. In the box, free, on day one.

Why we hold the line on this

Because the failure mode is so ordinary. Almost every tool that starts “for everybody” narrows, quietly, to “for everybody who pays,” and no one decides it on purpose — it just happens one pricing meeting at a time. The defense is structural, not a slogan: give the core away so completely that there is nothing left to narrow. The Pump Club defends the daily by funding it personally. We defend the stack by giving it, cognition provided by Obsidian Delta, with no meter to reach for later.

So when the phrase shows up in our launch — and it will — this is what we mean by it, and this is the standard we want to be held to. Fitness, and the tools for it, for everybody, meaning: the mover pays nothing, the beginner is served first, and the thing cannot be taken back once it is given.

This is Part 2 of five. Next: age is not an excuse — and what the research actually says, because that line is easy to turn into a platitude and the evidence behind it is better than a platitude.
